DESCRIPTION
This is a vintage photograph of Qutb Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world at 72 meters. The foundation for the red and buff sandstone Qutb Minar was laid by Qutbu'd-Din Aibak in 1199 AD. Qutb Minar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Mehrauli area of South Delhi.
Aibak had erected a single-storey minar, for the use of the mu'azzin (crier) to give calls for namaz. His successor and son-in-law Shamsu'd-Din Iltutmish added three more storeys to the Qutb Minar. Each storey had a balcony encircling the minar. The minar itself was covered in carvings of intricate designs and verses from the Holy Qur'an.
The top storey of the Qutb Minar was destroyed in 1369 after being struck by lightning. It was repaired by Firoz Shah Tughlak, who also added two new storeys in marble and red sandstone. Inscriptions reveal that in 1503, another lightning strike had damaged the structure and it was then repaired by Sultan Sikander Lodhi. After an earthquake hit the Qutb Minar in 1802, it was restored by Major R. Smith of the British Army in 1828.
The Qutb Minar is part of the Qutb Complex, a group of monuments in the area including the Iron Pillar of Delhi and Alai Minar and the most visited tourist spot in the city.

Samuel Bourne was a British photographer known for his prolific seven years of work in India, from 1863 to 1870. Bourne was the first ever photographer to photograph the source of the Ganges during his expedition to the Himalayas. He captured some of the earliest images of the region. Bourne founded "Howard & Bourne" , a studio in Shimla in partnership with photographer William Howard. In 1864 they were joined by Charles Shepherd to form ?Howard, Bourne & Shepherd?. After the departure of Howard in 1866 it became "Bourne & Shepherd" which became a premium photographic studio in India. In 1870 Bourne sold off his shares in the studio and went back to England. The studio was perhaps the world?s oldest photographic business and operated until June 2016.
